A handful of brave young scientists took on the Carl Singer Foundation Session at ICYGMB in Levico in North Italy this year. For many, the prospect of addressing a large scientific audience for the first time is a daunting experience. We compound this by insisting on the inclusion of comedy 'treasures': a miscellaneous action, and a miscellaneous phrase!
Audience participation was encouraged by way of a treasure hunt. The quality €3 bottle of Prosecco, for correctly identifying more of this comedy action than anybody else, went to Steven Brown. Congratulations!
A special prize - for the rudest phrase ever vocalised at a yeast genetics conference - went to Federico Tondini. Brave man!
In 3rd place, with a check for £75, congratulations to Gaowen Liu. While her comedy was subtle, her clarity and presentation were fantastic.
In 2nd place, with a check for £150, congratulations to Chetan Rawal. Good science. Good amount of humour. Clear and well presented.
The winner, receiving a check for £300, mega congrats to David Gallo. Good science. Maximum humour and dance moves. Mostly clear. Very well presented.
The Carl Singer Foundation is the only charity dedicated to supporting the Yeast Community. 100% of money raised goes to supporting education in the field of yeast genetics, particularly among young scientists, and particularly with a bit of humour!
